Best Educational Games for Kids: How to Choose Building Blocks, Puzzle Games, and Memory Games by Age

Is your living room currently a landmine of stray toy cars or headless baby dolls? We’ve all been there! During my first few years of motherhood, I bought every viral toy on the market, only to realize my toddler was way more interested in the cardboard box the toy came in!

After a lot of trial and error (and a lot of stubbed toes), I learned that the secret isn’t just buying toys– it’s choosing the right educational games that actually match where your child is developmentally. Experts call it cognitive play or “playtime with purpose”. If you want to swap the clutter for toys that actually build brainpower, let’s talk about how to choose the best gear for every age and stage!

Toddlers (Ages 1–3): The Chunky Toys Phase

At this age, everything goes in the mouth, and fine motor skills are just warming up. When choosing toys for this group, think big, bold, and chunky!

  • How to Choose: Look for large wooden or foam building blocks that are easy for tiny hands to stack (and knock down– that’s the best part!)

  • Puzzles & Memory: Stick to simple shape-sorters or 2-piece puzzle games. For memory games, try Under the Cups– hide a small toy under one of two cups and let them guess where it is. It’s pure magic to them!

Did you know that playing with building blocks isn’t just about tall towers? Research shows it actually helps toddlers develop spatial language. When you say words like “under”, “over”, and “next to” while they stack, you’re literally hard-wiring their math and reading brains!eel

Preschoolers (Ages 3–5): The Explorer Phase

This is when their little imaginations really catch fire. They are ready for rules, patterns, and a bit of a challenge.

  • Building & Logic: Upgrade to magnetic tiles or sets where they have to follow a sequence (like blue must follow red).

  • The Level Up: This is the prime time for 12-to-24-piece jigsaw puzzle games and basic tangrams. Classic card-matching sets or sorting games with bright animals or colors are total winners. It’s amazing to see their focus finally start to kick in!

For a more tactical play, playing with playdough is a fantastic way to build concentration while having a giggle. It helps build fine motor skills, creativity and emotional regulation

School-Aged (6+ Years): The Strategist Phase

Once they hit school age, they want to prove how smart they are. They need games that require a bit of a master plan.

  • Complex Sets: Look for advanced building blocks like LEGOs or complex magnetic structures.

  • Brain Boosters: Introduce logic-based puzzle games like Sudoku for kids or even basic Chess. They function as mental exercises, improving cognitive abilities and problem-solving skills.

So, How Do You Choose What’s Best?

When it comes to the best educational games for kids and how to choose them by age, the process is actually quite simple. Follow their lead! If they are still struggling with their grip, stick to the chunky foam blocks. If they are bored with their baby toys, it’s time to introduce a strategy game. The goal is to find that sweet spot where they are challenged but not frustrated.

Remember, you don’t need a house full of every toy imaginable. A few well-chosen educational games, a couple of toy cars for floor play, and a sturdy set of blocks are all you really need to foster a lifetime of learning. To ensure a safe play time for your little ones, supervise the fun keeping accidents at bay.

You’re doing a great job curating their little world. Trust your gut, watch how they play, and don’t forget to get down on the floor and join the fun! Happy playing!

What to wear postpartum

The weeks after birth feel like a strange mix of exhaustion, softness, and rediscovering your own body. One day you’re still in maternity leggings; the next you’re trying to figure out which dresses even feel right anymore. Your clothes need to serve you, not demand anything from you. So, choosing the right postpartum wear is important. This phase isn’t about feeling supported, comfortable, and a little bit yourself again. Below is a practical, experience-based guide on what works for new moms when it comes to dressing during those early weeks. 1. Soft cottons, bamboo blends, and breathable knits are your best friends. They don’t cling, don’t irritate stitches, and they move with you instead of sticking in place. This is especially useful when you’re feeding around the clock or moving between the bed, sofa, and co...
