A Parent’s Go-To Guide for Safe and Comfy Baby Swaddling

A Parent’s Go-To Guide for Safe and Comfy Baby Swaddling

Your baby recognizes warmth and the feeling of being gently held before they recognize words. One of the only ways to let them know that they're safe here becomes a swaddle that reminds them of their first home, their mother’s womb.

In the early days, when everything feels new and unfamiliar, a swaddle becomes more than just fabric. It becomes quiet reassurance that they are loved and right where they belong.

Why You Should Swaddle Your Baby?

There are a lot of benefits to swaddling your little one.

For infants, being swaddled in a blanket often feels like being in their mother’s womb. This makes them feel comfortable and safe.

It creates an environment that offers optimal temperature for their body.

It often has calming effects on fussy babies and helps in soothing them.

With their arms secured in the swaddle, they are less likely to accidentally hurt or scratch themselves on their face.

Swaddled babies generally sleep for longer and more soundly. This is also because swaddling limits the startle reflex of babies that involuntarily wakes them up.

Things to Keep in Mind for Before You Swaddle

Here’s a list of important pointers that can make your swaddling experience easier.

Make sure the swaddle is not too tight and your baby is able to breathe normally. A swaddle that is too tight can also harm the baby’s hips.

The cloth that you use should be made from thin and baby-safe material like cotton. If it’s a heavy material, your baby might end up feeling too hot.

Around 2-6 months, you can swaddle your babies with their arms outside, and during this period if they start showing signs of rolling over, you can stop swaddling them altogether.

How to Swaddle Your Baby?

These are the steps for you to create a snug and cozy swaddle for your baby.

1. Lay a soft blanket, preferably made from cotton, flat on your bed's surface. The blanket should be laid out in a diamond shape. Then, you should fold the top corner down to get a straight line at the top.

2. Next up, lay your baby on their back with their shoulders just below the folded edge.

3. With your baby's left hand close to their body, pick the left corner of the blanket and fold it across your baby's body and tuck it snugly behind their back. It should be firm but not too tight.

4. Lift the bottom corner of the blanket to cover their feet. Make sure to leave a little room for your baby's legs to bend.

5. Bring the right corner across their body and tuck it behind their back.

6. Now that your baby is swaddled, be sure to check for any signs of discomfort or labored breathing, and modify the swaddle if required.

Swaddling is an important step in your baby’s care routine. As your little one begins to experience the world around them, this soft blanket becomes their first layer of comfort and reassurance. Your baby deserves to feel protected and completely at ease.
